One poem, One war, Two interpretations
Comparing the representations:
The two poems ‘Does it Matter?’ and ‘A Working Party’ share one poet, one war despite this, these two poems could not be more different in their representations of war. ‘A Working Party’ is a soldiers melancholy and mournful death, and Siegfried Sassoon’s ‘Does it Matter?’ consists of society having no real care towards a ex-soldiers body and mind condition.
The reason for the difference is quite clear; despite the fact the contrast may be a blurry- as the poems share the same poet. ‘Does it Matter?’ gives off ideas of neglection, ignorance, inexperience, oblivion and unawareness that society gives to the soldiers. ‘A working Party’ gives chaotic representations of the battlefield, shows how horrific death and giving visuals of the harsh conditions.
Siegfried Sassoon shows the same war in two very different ways. However, ‘Does it Matter?’ covers the era’s culture, and ‘A Working Party’ confronts the readers.
